The rapid changes occurring in communities across the Northeast have brought Extension professionals from many program areas into the realm of community development-related work. These professionals increasingly need basic skills in the processes, tools and techniques of community development. In addition, there is a growing need to understand the complexities and interdisciplinary nature of this work.
To make the most of current and future resources, the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development (NERCRD), the National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP) and Extension partners are embarking on a broad-based and multi-delivery-method training program designed to increase the community development, public policy, and organizational development skills and networking opportunities of Extension professionals.
We are pleased to announce a web-based training opportunity on Core Competencies in Community Development led by Dr. Janet Ayres on November 9, 2007 from 10:00am to noon eastern time. This training is relevant for all areas of Extension that deal with community- or group-level decision-making (including families, youth and 4-H as well as agriculture and forestry).
We envision a multi-year effort focusing initially on individual skill levels (facilitation, conflict management, understanding community and economic data, etc.) via distance-learning tools (Breeze, VTC, etc.) as appropriate. We plan to follow this up with a face-to-face training and networking workshop in Spring 2008. This will provide the basis for further program development to be conducted at the Fall 2008 Galaxy Conference. Current plans include investigating the needs and professional development priorities of individual states across the region and to coordinate our skill-building training efforts accordingly.
Prior to the meeting, participants will receive instructions on how to join Breeze along with the toll free number to be used for verbal communication.
