    The Center for Rural Massachusetts was formed in response to rapid growth, major changes in rural economy, and concern for the welfare of rural residents in the state. The center's current programs focus on careful study of the nature of rural Massachusetts, how its population, economy, housing, services and other characteristics differ from those of urban Massachusetts, and the implications of those differences. The center also hosts the Massachusetts Rural Development Council.
