The Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development exists to enhance the capacity of Land Grant Universities to foster regional prosperity through entrepreneurial and cluster-based innovation while assuring balanced use of natural resources in the northeastern United States. It carries out its mission in partnership with universities and other partners in the region.
The rural northeast faces a number of pressing policy issues. While some areas suffer from population loss, persistent poverty and economic stagnation, others are experiencing tremendous growth spillovers from urban centers. In this context, a key Northeast Center mission is to increase the capacity of residents in rural regions and communities to deal with those local problems that involve public sector decision-making. We achieve our mission by developing, integrating, synthesizing and delivering research-based knowledge to help trace out the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of alternative policy designs.
>>Helping communities on the rural-ruban fringe in making more rational land-use decisions through data-based models and analyses.
>>Promoting community based agricultural development and small farm clusters through improved networking.
>>Understanding the community characteristics and public interventions that enhance or discourage entrepreneurship.
>>Identifying new methods and policies to reduce persistent poverty.
>>Identifying the causes and consequences of youth out-migration (the brain drain), including the role of government fragmentation.
